$700 suspension upgrade vs. $3200 off-road suspension upgrade
Does more expensive mean more better? Let’s find out!
We bought two identical Toyota Tacomas, and we’re modifying them to be fun, daily drivers that you can take literally anywhere, except the ocean.
One Taco gets expensive parts, and one gets cheap parts. Then we test them, to see which components are worth spending your hard-earned money on.
Upgrading your suspension with new, longer travel springs and shocks can improve your truck’s ground clearance, ride quality, and ability to keep all 4 tires in touch with the ground while driving over uneven terrain.
They also let you run bigger, sicker wheels and tires.
Today, Hi Truck is getting….
An ICON Stage 4 Suspension System including front coilovers and rear shocks --both with external reservoirs-- a pair of add-a-leafs, and upper control arms all for $3200.
And Low Truck is getting a Bilstein 3” lift kit which comes with springs, shocks, and an add-a-leaf kit.
Our suspension upgrade costs $700-- less than a fourth the cost of Hi Team’s kit.

  • If you lift these trucks more than 2 inches in the front; you need an aftermarket uca. They won't align or track to center properly

    Charles McGinnisCharles McGinnisGün önce
  • Replace the rear leafs entirely. The Toyota leafs suck, I went through 3(with an add-a-leaf) in a year before I bought an aftermarket set. 3 years so far with the aftermarket.

  • At like 7:00 Dont let their comments discourage you about assembling a strut/coilover. There's dozens of videos showing how to compress and decompress springs on the truck safely.... with zero extra tools besides a jack

  • Really goofed up not testing at cruise speed down rough 2tracks. 5100s are a big gain in that scenario. But that’s where the icons are going to be the biggest gain, in theory.

  • It's a fun series but you didn't really cover the main reason why icons cost so much more - they have remote reservoirs, that would have been of a huge benefit shall you do any fast driving over some irrigation. Extra oil would have kept it much cooler, improving the handling and the comfort.

  • A couple of things I would suggest..... As I'm an automotive technician with 20 years of experience... Branick 7600 strut spring compressor. Get one. We in the industry call those cheap shit spring compressors Widow Makers. I refuse to use them. Next, Snap-On ball joint press. I bought one in 2009, and it had made ball joints soooo much easier, faster, and safer. Next, and this might be further down the road... Get a fucking lift installed in your shop. It'll increase productivity, save your knees and your back, and a they're not all that expensive.... Maybe 3k-4k. Good luck, gentlemen.

  • You can get more clearance from a body lift. let’s say you have a 26” tire from ground to top of the tire. For every 2 inches bigger tire you will get 1 inch ground clearance from body lift. So if you had a 30” tire you’d have 2” more ground clearance.

  • I get for the series, but it is better to build the rest of the truck first and do suspension last so the suspension can handle all the added weight you will be putting on.

  • The only real advantage to the expensive coilover kits have is when going fast on roughish roads. The added travel is max an inch or two so articulation is pretty much nothing. Spend the $15,000 on a mid to long travel suspension system if you want your ifs to actually perform in the woops and handle big jumps. Or the same $ to straight axle it if you want to crawl.

  • Another point, on the Icon suspension, they recommend you REBUILD the shocks EVERY 10 THOUSAND MILES!

  • Bother use a single rate coil that isn't dialed into the vehicle . And both use shocks that are pretty basic one just has the external reservoirs but neither are really anything special and neither are tuned to the specific application ...so you're not going to get any extra noteworthy performance out of the $3200 icon vs the cheaper stuff .

  • Common knowledge but still want them younger lads to know....Technically a body lift can give you more clearance for taller tires. Therefore giving your axle clearance from the ground. Your not gonna stuff 40's under your ranger but it may be the difference of getting a nice 33" with more desirable tread pattern.

  • The law of diminishing returns applies to “upgrades”. I say “upgrades” because it has to be said that whenever you modify a vehicle to gain performance in one area you will always compromise performance in another. That being said, upgrading performance often means the more money you spend the better the results however as the results get incrementally better the price rises significantly. So, is a 5% improvement in performance worth a 25% or more increase in price? The answer will depend on how much you’re willing to spend, and what you’re realistically going to do in your vehicle.
