  • Okinawa was primarily an American battle....at Halsey insistence. But don't forget....Britain's royal navy had over 200 naval vessels in the area many of which took part in this battle....including 5 carriers 4 battleships....supporting frigates cruisers and destroyers and over 750 aircraft including the naval version of the spitfire. American carriers had wooden decks and prone to bomb or crash damage... British carriers had armoured decks Bombs or kamikaze just bounced off.

  • You’re pronunciation of IJN Yamato is incorrect... The Japanese pronunciation is “Ya-MA-to” and not “Ya-MO-to” Apologies for the nitpicking, I’m just a naval history guy so I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. Great video otherwise, excellent animations as usual too.

  • My grandfather served in Japanese Imperial Army, where he was saved by a fellow Japanese soldier who was killed in one of the last Japanese defenses of the battle. He only survived because he became a POW, only returning to the Japanese mainland to a new American-occuupied Japan, where he settled down and married his girlfriend (my grandmother) who waited for him for more than 7 years. He died back in 2018 shortly after finding his attack squads flag. I am in no way condemning the war crimes on the Axis-Japanese part, I am simply stating that there are heroes on both sides. I am proud to see where Japan stands today and I'm sure my grandfather was too. Even though, like most Japanese he was bitter for a few years. I still have his Katana and Sqauds flag.

  • My Dad was aboard the USS Bunker Hill. He and two other men were locked in a small cubby off the boiler room. The ship burned for three days. He once said , the hardest thing he had to do in this life, was report to the flight deck and stand for role call. When he stood at attention in his spot, he looked around to see one hundred and fifty men, where just 3 days before stood 1,200 of his once dear friends.

  • I have to admit that I learned about the Battle of Okinawa and the heroic and highly decorated 442nd battalion from watching 'The Karate Kid' and 'The Karate Kid II'. NEVER learned any of this in my HS History classes. We did, however, spend two WEEKS learning about Andrew Jackson, and then, later, two DAYS on WWII and the Holocaust. I guess 'HOUSE, M.D.' got it right when the curmudgeon said, "Less reading, more TV."

  • We should have left Japan keep Korea and Vietnam and parts of china...maybe they would mostly be friendly and westernized as well.

    kenneth troutmankenneth troutman2 aylar önce
    • @kenneth troutman We should have for what? Why would the US allow japan to keep any territory after having fought a victorious total war with them for nearly 4 years?. At a stretch, they possibly could have remained within Korea for slightly longer (but even that would untenable, expecting koreans to put up with that would be like expecting Ireland to not revolt against British rule after ww1). America itself made a terrible decision when it handed vietnam back to the french. The french fucked up everything, USA was this close to possessing a major and fairly influential ally within the Southeast Asian region. And in china, the nationalist regime was simply too incompetent to defend itself unless US boots on the ground were involved

      CKS1949CKS1949Aylar önce
    • @CKS1949 20/20. Though I can understand not trusting japan at time but damn we should have.

      kenneth troutmankenneth troutmanAylar önce
    • Hilariously stupid and terrible decision. Vietnam could have been a major ally if we had not made the horrible decision if giving it back to the french and instead made it independent and propped up ho chi minh, who was originally pro-US. In china, we failed to provide the nationalists adequate support and what support we did have was just embezzled. And in Korea, the soviets took the northern half. No stopping them unless you want to enter another total war right after you finished your last one
