There are many different types of anxiety disorders, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is one of the most common and difficult to deal with. In this video, we discuss the symptoms of GAD.
For help, try online therapy:
Symptoms of GAD:
A. Excessive anxiety and worry (apprehensive expectation), occurring more days than not for at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities (such as work or school performance).
B. The individual finds it difficult to control the worry.
C. The anxiety and worry are associated with three (or more) of the following six symptoms (with at least some symptoms having been present for more days than not for the past 6 months):
Note: Only one item is required in children.
1. Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge.
2. Being easily fatigued.
3. Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank.
4. Irritability.
5. Muscle tension.
6. Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless, unsatisfying sleep).
D. The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
E. The disturbance is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or another medical condition (e.g., hyperthyroidism).
F. The disturbance is not better explained by another mental disorder (e.g., anxiety or worry about having panic attacks in panic disorder, negative evaluation in social anxiety disorder [social phobia], contamination or other obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder, separation from attachment figures in separation anxiety disorder, reminders of traumatic events in posttraumatic stress disorder, gaining weight in anorexia nervosa, physical complaints in somatic symptom disorder, perceived appearance flaws in body dysmorphic disorder, having a serious illness in illness anxiety disorder, or the content of delusional beliefs in schizophrenia or delusional disorder).

  • I ve had it since child. Didnt know till 2014. Chewed fingers. Stomach aches. Cried myself to sleep thinking of when parent's die at 10!! Mysterious aches an pains, an joint pain. Went to Baylor university Dr an had all these tests ran. Nothing. Now, its exactly as the book. Esp the irritation. I start yelling, getting mad. But Im really just extremely worried. Freaking out. Because of all the stress or problems that are so unnecessary an I make in my mind. Its all consuming. But then again, I do spot potential probs coming an catch them fr happening. Like an empath. (?) Which leads me to depression later on. Like "Am I ever normal? Will I be normal? These meds cause brain probs later in life. What about that? Health anxiety. Death anxiety." But Ive lost a child also. In 2000. That, I think, revved up the anxiety about death of loved ones an health worry. But what profession did I get into? Health professional! Huh?? Then a dependence on a medication. It helped with the anxiety an depression at first. Then had to take more an more. Detox 2014. Then menopause. Then depression hit. Then the anxiety has slowly increased fr caregiving to my elderly parent's. An other areas. I feel I have badluck an wierd bad stuff happens to me all time. Nothing goes smooth. Always a hiccup. Its getting to where I dont want to be part of something because If Im involved something will screw up. Then anxiety, to try an fix prob of whatever went wrong. Its like, give me a break. Please!. So I walk or swing, yes swing, on a swing set. I have to go walking or Ill blow or cry. Extreme stress rt now doesnt help. Cortisol levels are pretty high I bet in my body. Not good. But great subject. Its not like I let my mind get so messy or chaotic on purpose. Or just stop it! I wish! Just some peace an quite for a bit.

  • You're awesome and it's clear you do this because you really want to help. I definitely have anxiety problems, but it's not GAD. My anxiety goes off at certain triggers and it can have me feeling breathless for days, but I wouldn't say I spend more days anxious than not in any given month or week. Last summer, my husband and I were going through a really serious and taxing medical situation, so that was bad enough, but then my sister-in-law had an attitude about what we were going through and that sent me to the ER with an anxiety attack. Worst experience ever. What's more, on the day of the attack I HAD to work supervising some exams, so I spent the whole morning on the verge of tears and taking deep breaths. After the exams, I drove myself straight to the ER and had my husband pick me up there.
