Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 6, the final episode, gets a full in-depth analysis of the deeper themes and parallels with The Lord of the Rings. Why did Bran become king, and was that part of his plan all along? Why was the Iron Throne destroyed? Erik Voss explains the Game of Thrones ending, and how it connects to the longtime thematic threads throughout the 8 seasons. How is Dany's villainy inspired by real-world leaders? Where is Jon going in the final shot of the series? What is "west of Westeros" and why is Arya going there? How is the Iron Throne like the Ring of Power, and is Jon Snow Frodo Baggins?

    • I noticed that was the last line of dialog in the series: "I once brought a jackass and a honeycomb into a brothel..." Not the last words, but the last line of dialog. Also, Tyrion carrying the: "Who better to lead than the keeper of stories." These are both _so_ George RR Martin.

  • Tyrion betrayed Dany by not having the Lannisters killed last season. Dany didn't want 2 kill Jon, Dany said be with me.

  • Sounds to me like these 'parallels' are really just words straight up taken from earlier seasons so as to try to neatly explain huge gaps in chapter development. Also, the themes are straight up taken for Lord of the Rings.

  • Does it bother anyone how much Game of Thrones is compared to Lord of the Rings?? Game of Rings and/or Lord of Thrones?? I don't know but it makes me feel like it is being suggested George R.R. Martin simply mirrored and replaced important aspects of Lord of the Rings and wrote around these things, beefed up a little/lot of history and came up with Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire) - kinda takes away from an extremely creative, talented writer, doesn't it?

  • PROPHECIES: I never really understood why people would be hung up by prophecies? I have always felt prophecies were stories of long ago times; perhaps times when reality could not be explained or did not turn out to be what we wanted. I never felt Game of Thrones needed to fulfill or wrap up prophecies. To me, they just made the GOT story interesting and gave us something to think about, not something to totally occupy us.

  • Why does "searching" for Drogon mean warging into him? I see people griping that "why didn't Bran just warg into Drogon and stop the massacre?" Why can't it just mean warging into ravens as he always does, and locating Drogon? I don't like the idea that Bran can warg into dragons. IMO.

  • Casual watcher here, but this is one of the best analyses you guys have done. Instead of focusing on the "negative" you focused on cool parallels and interesting threads the episode contained. I think this is what the writers were trying to do, despite the Internet's collective thumbs down opinion.

  • Did someone noticed, in the book about the Kingsguard Commanders, Duncan the Tall is also mentioned. Sir Brienne of Tarth is a confirmed descendant of Duncan from Flea Bottom (Duncan the Tall). He was the main character of the book "The Hedge Knight" by George R. R. Martin. He was a Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Aegon Targaryan (brother of the former Maester Aemon Targaryan) was his squire.
