    • Thanks for putting this together I rather enjoyed it. My father grew up in Crete and was 16 when the germans landed and had to take the life of many Germans. I do my own ANZAC BATTLE OF CRETE REMEMBRANCE WALK to honour all this who suffered and to share the story of the everlasting relationship that was formed between the people of Crete and the ANZACS. Continue the great work you are doing because as I say History is important, So be apart of it.

  • Worst airborne disaster? They still conquered the island losing close to 4000 and 2000 wounded while the other part lost 15k (UK and ANZ) and 10k to 14k Greek dead or captured. Taking into account that the allied where 7 times more numerous at the start of the attack.

  • I would not say ~1000 dead paratroops out of 22000 is a disaster, they captured the island in an offensive battle using light infantry paradropped against enemy with 42000 soldiers.

  • from a real historian @the 5 ppl who might read this: - Germans land - got only guns and knifes left - British forces, knew they come - but are even lesser equipped and got pushed back... this is the moment you all should ask questions... And the whole video ends with a ripped out of context quote to prove the point that a successful invasion was a disaster. I would read up about who is who in the German army, maybe that answers the question why it was no loss for the German military and what that quote actually means.

  • The biggest mistake of Greece, is that did not surrender to Italy. Europe did not deserve the blood of 800.000 Greek people who died during that world. And this becomes obvious after the war and how harmful was the great Britain, USA and ussr against Greece. If Germany was fascist 1 time, the rest of the western world was and is till today, 10 times more fascist than Hitler. F*ck you. -soldier of Greek army (for now).

  • I have to command you on the accuarcy of the video and showing some battlesites wich arent frequently mentioned. But I have to imagine if this was the exact outcome of an american airborne assault on some japanese island, this video would probably be about how outnumbered and bad equipped paratroopers defied all odds and still pushed through an overwhelming enemy force, while being attacked by ruthless Japanese Militia. This battle is extremly fascinating especially how paratroop-operations evolved over the course of the war. Both sides did incredible feats on Crete. Its discredit to history to paint it so one-sided.

  • Fun fact: the vendetta mafia families have was brought over by Greek Cretans about 500 years ago to south Italy by them and they continued this practise. Even today there's Greek cities in Calabria and Sicily that speak Greek even street signs are in both Greek and Italian. There's villages that still talk in Greek!

  • Hardly a disaster, island was taken, Romanian oilfields made safe from allied bombing for the next 3 years, 4 times bigger losses on the Allied side, and significant losses inflicted on the Royal navy. Allies would claim complete success if Market Garden ended up in a similar way.

      LesDodo ClipsLesDodo Clips9 gün önce
    • @LesDodo Clips "Germans took such heavy casualties all further para drops were abandoned" and yet allies werent convinced about the potential paratroppers had until they saw what happened on Crete, a shocking victory for the axis, no one till then managed to conquer and island via air. The Germans literally snatched a huge island surrounded with RN and garrisoned by a far lager force than they anticipated. They faced an utterly hostile and fanatical population that was ready to attack them with pitchforks and knives, and they defeated them. All for less than 4000 dead and under 6000 casualties in total. Allied forces suffered roughly 22 000 casualties with 4000 dead and the rest wounded and taken prisoner. Thats an exchange of 4 to 1 and we are talking here about the regular army troops, not greek civilian taking up arms. The numbers are well known, go an open a book. The whole "pyrrhic victory" trope was started by British propaganda of the time proclaiming yet another "victory through defeat" and claiming they killed over 20 000 German paras...

      D DD D9 gün önce
    • Germans took such heavy casualties all further para drops were abandoned Damage to the Royal Navy was insignificant and didn’t turn the tide Most allied casualties were civilians

  • Why didnt you mention the British soldiers at all? There were thousands of them there, after all. I appreciate that Crete has a special place in the hearts of ANZAC troops, just like Gallipoli, but also like Gallipoli, Brits were present (and died alongside) ANZAC troops. In fact in Gallipoli more Brits actually died than ANZAC troops, not that you'd know it from the way some people report it. This probably looks petty. I don't mean it to be so. Frankly, I dread to think of a world where the Commonwealth didn't support the UK. Without them, we would not have been able to do anything. But I feel like a mention of the fact that the Brits were there as well wouldn't have gone amiss, since you seem to have credited the defence entirely to the Aussies and the Kiwis. Suppose you hadn't mentioned them at all; they would be angry, and rightfully so.

  • Armchair Historian: The Germans didn't lose 6000 men killed; they suffered 5,894 *_total casualties_* (including aircrew losses). If Italian casualties are added, the total may have pushed a bit over 6000. The Allies suffered *TWENTY-THREE THOUSAND* casualties including roughly 17,500 men taken prisoner. In addition, over 500 Cretan civilians were executed by Axis troops. In terms of personnel losses, the Battle of Crete was a lopsided Axis victory. The butcher's bill gets more complicated when equipment losses are compared: the Luftwaffe lost 284 planes, plus 125 more damaged, versus the Royal Navy's losses of 12 fleet and 7 auxiliary ships sunk, plus 22 more damaged. Another complexity comes from comparison of casualties among skilled personnel: arguably the air crews lost by the Luftwaffe represented a greater investment in training than the ship crews lost by the Royal Navy. Similarly, the slain Fallschirmjagers were more highly trained than most of the Greek and British infantry lost on Crete (and certainly more so than the Cretan villagers who slew some of them).

  • As a Brit it wasn't that big of a disaster. They took Crete...even with devastating and withering fire as they were jumping from their craft. They took the Cretan airfields and protected them to allow resupply and reinforcements. It was Crete that Winston Churchill pressed for a specialised Airfield defence force....thus the RAF Regiment were born. A brilliant German plan that almost failed....but ultimately won.
