  • Thank you! This was a really great introduction /summary. I tried watching 4 or 5 other short Spanish Civil War YT vides before yours but they were so hard to listen to & watch that I couldn't stay with them; the speech was too fast, very quick and 'loud' images and lettering, all a bit too much of a 'car-crash' experience, in my opinion! Thanks for making something different & digestible!

  • Nationalist atrocities were more systematic than Republican atrocities, but what's your point? The Republican government gave out arms to Marxist labour unions to fight Franco knowing that their members would form roaming street gangs of armed militia, wreaking havoc not just on upper class Spaniards, who were terrorized and afraid to leave their homes, but also thousands of priests, nuns, and lay Catholics, who were murdered simply because of their faith. It was a Catholic holocaust. Far from being democratic, the Republican government stood by and allowed extremists to destabilize the country, setting the stage for a Communist revolution. This was not a war of democracy versus fascism, but of revolution versus counter-revolution. The Nationalists had every reason to distrust "democracy" under those circumstances as it was merely a stepping stone to a Communist takeover.

  • As a result, Spain is to this day a political parallel universe where the nazis actually won the war. Imagine if Hitler had died in 1975 and Goebbles had formed a political party and reluctantly accepted democracy, but without touching anything else (economy, judiciary, military, ...) . That's Spain.

  • Can you explain why fascist are referred as far right!? When they call them selves socialist!? As far as I know the only difference between fascists and communist is one in nationalist and the other is not. • For a so called historian armchair or other wise, your video never went into why the nationalists won in any way what so ever , i know your video is short so you cannot go into depth , but if you are not going into depth then you should not make videos about a very complex war and the political reasons for it starting , you generally seem to put the blame on the government and say it was useless government that caused the problems , in republican Spain the working class and landless peasants made up around 80% of the population the small middle class around 10% and the aristocratic landowners and capitalists the remainder , the Republican government who were made up of Liberals, Republicans , Socialists and Communists , but all but one of the ministerial post were held by the Liberals and Republicans with only one Socialist minister , they only introduced what would today would be considered very moderate reforms , including a eight hour working day, workers actually being given money for work they had done plus some other very moderate reforms which were considered the beginning of Communism by the ruling class . One of the main reasons for the republic struggling was although it was a democratically elected Liberal government once the civil war started the other european democracies refused to allow the legal government of Spain the right to buy weapons which under international law it should have been allowed to do and it was short of modern weapons , weapons which the nationalists were given by Italy and Germany , its was a few months after the war started that the Soviet union only then started to sell the government weapons , you also dont go into the fact that the pre-war army in Spain hardly had any training and many of its officers had brought there commissions and had very little training either , marching in step was about all half of the army could do ,it was used by the rich and wealthy middle classes so theirs sons could strut around in uniform in total safety with very little chance they would ever see action .You should have pointed these things out , as i have said a 15 minute video is to short to do justice to the subject , after all the early 1980s documentary done by Granada television did not really do the subject justice even at six hours long , The Spanish civil war is a very complex subject that would require time that no television company would ever allow it to be given , its a subject ive been studying for 41 years since i was 16 and im still finding out things even after that amount of time.

  • You completely glossed over the Red Terror, in which upwards of 100,000 people were massacred. It involved mass rape, murder, torture and included people being burned alive and crucified. You omitted mention of this in order to promote a distorted, propagandistic view of history.

  • Calling tanks what the germans sent at the start of the war isn't' very right. They were more armored cars with tracks. The Russians were the ones who sent real tanks... and the Rebels made a lot of effort to capture them, giving 500 pesetas (today would be the equivalent of a worker monthly salary) to any soldier who managed to capture a working one. Pretty sure some ended in Germany but the vast majority of them were used against the Republic. And saying that Franco was on charge at the start isn't right too. He was the most important one that didn't die. There are some interesting theories on this but nothing confirmed besides the death of José Antonio Primo de Rivera, who was captured by republicans, and later offered for a prisoner exchange that Franco turned down. After all, Primo de Rivera was a political leader and Franco a Military, only one could rule Spain. Also, Franco and he weren't in the best relations with Franco calling him "a foppish playboy" or after his capture he even refused to use his name to refer him. In the end, Primo de Rivera was executed by the republicans and Franco used his image as a martyr. Ruthless, yes, but very intelligent, after the war the movement created by Primo de Rivera (La Falange Española) ended being one of the main pillars of Franco's regime.

Critical for the "Nationalists" will be establishing secure zones of control in southern Florida and Texas in order to BLOCK supplies from reaching the "Demosists" sent from Mexico and Cuba. Of course it will be difficult should Canada decide to intervene. I imagine England will try to repeat 'history' as well.... for the dirty "Demosists"! STARVE THE CITIES will be the strategic imperative 👿😡💀

  • It wasn't a really good or bad side in the Spanish civil war . Both factions committed acts of despicable evil . The leftist held the power at the time but they oppressed the rest in such intolerant way than the right found the excuse to insurrect and start a " good fight " to throw out of power the left . Franco is a fascinating figure . You must think he was evil and a really lucky guy who happened to be in the right moment to grab power , but in fact he was an admirable political leader and military commander. Franco was an army officer deployed in North Africa and saw real nasty warfare , not like the establishment military circle in Madrid who happened to support the left and were mostly theoreticians of the art of warfare . Franco was gaining support during the civil war among the right , and he proved was the most capable military commander. He wasn't perfect and committed some error and couldn't take Madrid when attacked however he splitted leftist territory and severely damaged its possibilities of resisting. Sometimes history is not white and back there is a lot of gray areas . The ideal would have been the two political Spaniard factions resolves their discrepancies thought democratic means.

  • What the hell is this man? Like, are you kidding? Franco "started the war because de CEDA Lost the elections"? What kind of lie is that man? It's just incredible that you are unable to truly show all facts in a story... The war started because the most influential congressman of CEDA was murdered, after several death-threats from socialist and communist leaders in the Parliament were done! Just not saying that and truly making people believe Franco had no better idea than to start s civil war because his "all-time-favorite" (irony) party lost elections... Just incredible man. Really thought s history Chunnel as this would be able to tell all facts of a story, not just the ones you like... See I'm completely wrong.

  • ''Manuel Azaña lived in exile in France for more than a year after the war, trapped by the invasion of France by Germany and institution of the Vichy regime. He died on 3 November 1940, in Montauban, France. He received the last rites of Catholicism before his death. The Vichy French authorities refused to allow his coffin to be covered with the Spanish Republican flag. The coffin was covered instead with the flag of Mexico, whose government had vested him with Mexican citizenship and named him Honorary Ambassador to grant him diplomatic immunity. His residence was officially an extension of the Mexican Embassy and therefore Mexican soil. Several attempts were made to arrest him to take him back to Madrid, all of which failed thanks to his immunity and the presence of Mexican military personnel.'' Yeah, Mexico was based back then. We recieved many refugees too, and a lot of then where kids.
