Very good narration. Both German and Russian soldiers fought bravely. Germans were determined to capture and Russian defiant to withstand. I understand if the weather was normal and not so cold harsh as -30 degree C, the result would have been somewhat different.
German's we're murders especially SS troops and they get well deserved death.

I talked to a German who survived Stalingrad. He was one of the few that walked back. Cannabilism was very common on the Russian side. One thing he talked about was in the part of the city he was at had one place to get fresh water. Snipers from both sides watched it. From madness groups of people would run to get water. After weeks the frozen bodies provided cover. On the coldest days you had a friend with you to pull the turd out before it froze to your rectum. He was in the SS and I asked him why. He said his family would get a better pension when he died. He migrated to America and he lived a block over and had no problem talking about what he experienced. He hated Hitler after he left everyone to die in the Battle of Stalingrad.

Well this series didn't last long
Some years ago I was working as a truck driver and loading at a German facrory. There was a man working in the canteen where I was sent for a coffee while waiting for my consignment. The man in the canteen had a problem and tapped his head and said, "Stahl" (steel). He told me he had been at Stalingrad and was wounded 20 times. Each time he was patched up and returned to the fight. His final wound blew away part of his head, hence the steel plate. This was his ticket home. He showed me some of his wounds so there was no doubt in my mind that he was telling the truth.They had it tough as did the Russians.Let us hope that neither us or our children or grandchildren have to share the experience of war.

Stalin ordered "not one step back". It wasn't just the Volga to their backs, their own political officers would have executed them for falling back. That's the ultimate motivator. It was Hitler's ego that prevented him from giving the order to fall back. He didn't care about those men. Goering promised Hitler he could supply the troops from the air which never happened. There are some incredible stories of heroism and cowardice of the last soldiers out of Stalingrad before the airport finally closed.

Stalingrad was defended by Russians. The war was happening in western/European Russia and all the people there were ethnic Russians.

It is hard to underestimate help and moral support of the German people to the Nazis. Despite the opinion that German people was opressed by the Nazis, we can see here that their families didn't care much about the atrocities, distructions and killings brought by their sons. The fate of the remains were even worse. You knew Soviet were anything but kind to their enemy who tried to annihilate them. These were veteran solider who thought they were foughting for their motherland. How sad. No one deserves such horrified demise. Speaking for both side.
He was not supposed to go to Russia. None of German soldiers were supposed to go to Russia. They were supposed to stay home, and live normal lives. But they came to Russia, to kill, enslave and conquer, and all they got back is justice.
