Locksmith ripoffs: Hidden camera investigation (Marketplace)

Who do you call when you're locked out of your home? A locksmith. But industry experts tell us some of them are duping customers with the promise of a quick and cheap fix, only to end up ripping you off. CBC Marketplace uncovers a network of fake local business locations and fake five-star reviews cluttering Google Maps in the Greater Toronto Area.
We also rig up a house with hidden cameras to test locksmiths advertising their services online, and expose how some companies use low prices, fake names, fake addresses and fake reviews to lure you in. Google says it is now auditing every locksmith listing in Canada following our investigation.

  • You people in Canada are way too nice to pay those outrageous prices, shht where I live in the US no locksmith could ever charged me those prices after I asked for a price quote over the phone... It would be a bad day for him.

  • If you're interested is seeing a real lock smith in action, look for 'Lock picking lawyer' on YT. He can open just about any lock and gives suggestions on what locks to not buy. I think he does it for just a hobby, but there lots of vids with all kinds of different types of locks. Very interesting for some.

  • this was good until the end. google is a private company, not a utility. google should be policing its own maps. if they dont then there are plenty of better alternatives.

  • a friend of mine, together with her flatmate, got locked out of her flat (in London). Typical "each thought that the other had the key, so left it home". `They thought they were looking at around £50 to pick the loch, or maybe £50 each. The lock was "pick proof" (I'm no locksmith, but I don't believe it was pickproof) and the girls ended up paying half a grand for replacements, expensive lock etc etc etc. Obnoxious

  • This news company is a sham. They have never heard of lead gen websites or search engine optomization. And in order to do that, google needs an address so most companies will mark their business on an empty lot to expand their exposure to clients. Its smart business, not news...

  • That second guy was awesome.. give him a break FFS. Only mistake was he said google.. I do house calls all the time and with very happy customers who want to give back I say "a good review helps or a letter to the company" just taking pride in your work, making sure the honest guys are called before crooks and it all starts with the reviews. Unfortunately more people will take the time to give a bad review. Your solid honest work should be insensitive enough to get a positive review but unfortunately most people won't. But they will rip you to pieces if their just having a bad day or got bad information.

  • This is what happens when companies pay their technicians off of commission. They say you need the absolute highest priced remedy they can offer. I was replacing breakers in a panel and overheard a conversation between the homeowner and a commission-paid plumber that convinced him he needed every pipe in his crawlspace converted to PVC in order to fix a leaking P-trap in his sink. Thousands of dollars.
