Ugh. There just wasn’t enough evidence for them to prove without a doubt she did it with malice. That’s the justice system. Even if the circumstancial evidence is enough to convict her it’s just not enough in our justice system. If it’s anyone’s “fault” ,for not getting the conviction that we all think she should have gotten, it should be the state’s. Have back up audio !!! Don’t be sloppy with protecting the crime scene and be thorough. I feel really bad for Steven’s mom and family. I do not believe they received any justice and I do believe MK should have been charged with at least a manslaughter charge. I wonder if the family will sue for wrongful death or do anything more ? Just so sad. Not fair.

She either knows how to handle guns or she doesn’t. And it seems she knows how they work. And that lying she did...if you’re innocent that doesn’t come up. AND THEN she mentions it was self defense. I’m on the jury with this info...I will vote guilty.
Fact is burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The jury did their jobs according to the law. The cops screwed up if the confession was legit. There was mishandling for sure. The jury made the right call. There was reasonable doubt. The defense did their jobs and defended their client. The prosecution worked with what they had but without the confession tape and the with the mishandling of the gun, plus with his violent texts, the verdict was correct. There is no way to prove he wasn't abusive or that she meant to kill him. Most people in this country have this idea that suspicion is enough. Reasonable doubt is there to protect the innocent but it comes with the cost that screw-ups in the investigation chain can lead to guilty people getting off. I think manslaughter would have been the better charge. They were both toxic to each other and murder was a reach with what they had. She did kill him but manslaughter allows for the idea that he was also part of the problem. She admitted she did it, but without that tape of the confession I would have voted not guiltily because the prosecution didn't meet their burden to prove murder. It's a sad story. I feel awful for his mother and family.

Toxic relationships turn a person toxic. He very well could have beaten her and turned her the way she is. And she's probably not any better. But the messages just truly show he's verbally abusive. And he threatened her in them. I think it's self defense. Still shouldn't have lied to the police.

They are both clearly toxic I do not understand why people like this keep going back to each other, but she is definitely guilty! The grease on the gun, where he was sitting when he was shot, the witnesses that prove her behavior, and the fact that she keeps changing her story if you notice women like this like to keep making their story sound worse every time they have a chance to speak, first it's "oh he was hitting me" then it's "he raped me" and it just keeps escalating. It probably was not pre meditated but it was out of anger like she said on the tape and then as soon as it happened she probably realized what she had done like realized it was too far.

I do feel it was a spur of a moment thing and she herself called 911, I mean she could have tampered with the crime scene but she didn’t. He was found alive with a pulse. After he died I guess she thought she didn’t deserve to spend the rest of her life in prison. I hate guns ugh 🤦♂️

I went to school with her Taylor Street Middle to be exact. We had several classes together , all honor classes. She was extremely intelligent and extremely crazy.

i don't think he is as innocent as his family and friends are making him out to be. i think it was probably a mutually abusive relationship and i honestly think we can never know what happened that night. she definitely shot him but weather she shot him in self defense or she just got too angry i don't think is something we will ever know because we weren't in that room with them. she definitely pulled the trigger but i don't think we will ever know the circumstances of that night for sure.

I was in a relationship with someone that made everyone believe I was doing things to him but he was extremely abusive to me but none of his friends took the time to hear me out because of the idea that he already put in their head
I don’t know what the verdict will be but I do think they were abusive to each other. It sounds like one of them was bound to murder the other. And just because someone has sexual trauma in their past, doesn’t mean they wouldn’t look up violent sex things. It can be a coping mechanism for some people. Also if he was abusive to her, she very well could’ve went tracking him down because that’s all she knew. I think they were both abusive though and I think it was murder. I think guns in the house with this relationship was just not a good choice.

I agree with what the jury decided. She killed him, but there isn’t enough concrete solid evidence to convict her. Our system is innocent until proven guilty, so their decision seems to be in that vein. Because they couldn’t prove her guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt they had to say ‘not guilty’ unfortunately. Now, regarding the couple both were terrible people and you can’t ignore his threatening messages just because he’s the one who got shot.

I'm saddened by the verdict but not surprised. Reasonable doubt is tough, and the Prosecutor didn't prove it. But, Mary Kate has a LOT of issues. She got away with it, and I hope anyone who dates her sleeps with one eye open. Her problems didn't go away, they are there, and i hope she's getting counseling, but God help anyone who gets in a relationship with her.. she's dangerous!!!
This was clearly a toxic relationship and it brought out awful sides in the both of them.... but the awful truth is she killed him and she flat out admitted it and I think she should have 100% been held accountable for that.

My roommate went to school with mk and when she told me about this, it pointed straight to her in my head. She is known to be crazy and has recently been found on tik toc dancing to the song “carol baskin, killed her her husband...” you know the song. Laughing and everyone blew up on her. She’s had to move to another state because everyone knows she did it
It was probably a question of who would be the first to shoot the other. The confession would still have been thrown out because of duress due to the police officers technique of shouting and being aggressive. The EMTs were very crucial in destroying this case by moving the weapon. Also if he was so abusive to her she would be afraid to confront him in public because of potential further abuse at home later. They just got together as a couple too young and were not mature enough to learn how to resolve issues with each other or to know how to mutually end the toxic relationship. I’m just glad there were no children involved. In my personal opinion, she got away with manslaughter, but there was not enough legal evidence for conviction due to gross negligence by supposedly trained individuals. My son, for four years, was in a toxic relationship a lot like this with his girlfriend and I am so thankful that he ended it before she did something like this to him. Because the way it was going, it was just a matter of time. Although she was tinier and he’s a big guy she just had a way of manipulating and harming him physically and emotionally.
At the very least there was enough evidence for involuntary manslaughter. There should be some consequences for her actions. She sought him at that night, forced a confrontation that resulted in him losing his life. I'm not sure exactly what she's guilty of but she's far from innocent.

There’s no proof that he sent all those nasty messages to her. She easily could have sent them to herself from his phone. He may have hit and hollered but I feel that she was toxic for years before and he broke. Funny she didn’t have not one photo of her “bruises”. She also lied about him plunging at her when and she just happened to have a gun pointing at him, yet the police said he was sitting on the corner of the bed and fell back. No doubt there was a big fight going on but she deliberately shot him. In my opinion.

As to you said if they had processed the crime scene correctly and had the taped confession it may have been enough to over come the text messages but without the other evidence I would have to err on the side of caution and aquit her.

Why ? She’s so young why do you want her to rot in jail. It was an alcohol and drug fuelled accident. She was probably in a Blackout anyway. She’s a chronic alcoholic. If you don’t know what a blackout is go to Al-anon and ask. Alcohol and drug cause schizophrenic behaviour. They were not in their right minds. You have to understand the social dynamics.
