Nissan Navara vs Toyota Hilux vs Isuzu D-Max Review

Since debuting in 2015, Toyota has largely left the hot-selling ute alone. And why wouldn’t you, when it sells so well. But with ute buyers always wanting a bit of extra luxury and better specifications, Toyota has brought out the HiLux SR5+.
There’s also a HiLux SR+, but we’ve only got the SR5+ in this instance. While it has always been a solid ute, the HiLux has been criticised for its lack of value compared to the competition. Now with a bit of new spec on the sheet, Toyota is looking to adjust that.

  • I got a 2007 d-max, put koni shocks on it, flat batteries all the time 2 x alternator, a starter motor, the egr valves fucked. Paid , £8,000 for it 2 years ago. So far its cost me £4,500 to get running. After it slammed itself into 1st gear 60mph. Yes its an auto. I am thoroughly pissed off with shit box. Got the 3.0td with the prodrive pack on it. Its gutless. Supposed to be up from 130bhp to 163bhp. It ain't nowhere even near 130bhp. Could have bought a 2014 for £12,000 😡😡😡

  • The guy doesn’t know how to drive. You don’t put it in low gear and just drive slowly. You read the trail and see where you need to accelerate to get momentum and then just maintain momentum. If you think the car is gonna do everything for you don’t go off road

  • this guy doesn't know how to pick a proper line, each car has a different specs ground clearance suspension etc. and i am not satisfied the way he drives the dmax.. it may be a bias review.. just sayin seen alot of live action performance of dmax.. also in 4wd action.. justified

  • Now you know why Toyota charges the Toyota tax on all its vehicles- have to fork out a good 15% of their revenue on "journos" for commendation. I could easily muck up the drive and correct those errors when driving a Toyota claiming its invincibility just like Graham Cahill does with the Isuzu supplied vehicles!

  • One thing which you don't mention (and I assume this is the case) that the vehicles you are testing still have their standard road tyres fitted? And whether you let the pressures down to 18 psi? I would not take my Nissan up a climb like that unless I had an off road set of tyres and had let the pressure down a bit. I know the comparison is with "stock standard" Utes but if you were really tackling the tough stuff you would add a few things e.g tyres etc to make it easier on the vehicles...and not break a CV!! The Navara in terms of dimensions is actually bigger that a Toyota Landcruiser!! I love my Nissan which was a hell of a lot cheaper than the Toyota!!

  • Nice comparison! However being a 4x4 review im unsure why the navaras lacking payload is taken into consideration. Can easily take any load you'd want to take 4x4ing and/or camping without any issues.

  • Yet another review where you only look at automatic transmissions. You drive a manual you only steer an automatic. Isuzu is the best performing in manual set up, most fuel efficient and most reliable. It is built to be a workhorse.

  • en el trabajo me toco,hacerme de una L200 Mitsu 3.2,,,por que no alcance Toyotas hy lux,en dos años andubo perfecto,no asi algunas toyotas,repuestos mas baratos para mantencion,y la traccion superselect,una maravilla,junto con el bloqueo trasero,NO digo que Toyota,Nissan,sean malas,sino que otras marcas tambien se destacan,hoy me toco elegir entre Toyota 2.8 y Mitsu 2.4 y elegi mitsu 2.4 y 180 hp,veremos como se comporta

  • I’m on my 2nd Isuzu. Had a 09 plate Rodeo for 3 years & only had to replace 2 tyres & battery. Now I have a 13 plate D-max & no problems so far. Great motors

  • Most people will never understand what a hilux is all about.... Unless you have to work these utes close to death to feed your family then you'll be able to understand why the hilux wins every time.

    • @Alex Frankl our experience with the dmax is that it does not handle overloading well. The chassis will sag and the body begin to fall apart sooner than hilux. Engine reliability is on par if not slightly better than hilux.

    • Yep , my ute is my bread and butter , tows a tandem tipper with an excavator on board and tools on the ute , clock 40k a year with lots of offroad work , for the second time running I bought the toughest and most relible ute on the market , Isuzu's mighty D Max .
