If hindsight were 20/20 I don't know if we would have done half the things we have done.
Four years ago, we bought a boat and set out to explore the world with absolutely no sailing experience. Experts and novices all around the world wide web told us we would fail, sink, and die.
Well, surprise, surprise, we’re still alive! Turns out you CAN just go buy a boat and sail about the world.
BUT…that doesn’t mean it’s been easy.
To say we had (and still have) a lot to learn is an understatement. Knowing we were clueless, we made a video so we would be able to one day reflect on our newbie expectations and compare them to reality.
Looking back at our peculiar beginning now is both comical and endearing. We really had no idea what was ahead of us. We thought our RV experience would help…and it did…but there is sooo much more to boat life than we could comprehend.
Currently, we’re stuck in isolation in Fiji. Restrictions and closures keep us from exploring so we’ve been sifting through years of videos, mistakes, misadventures, and victories. Asking ourselves, if we could go back in time what advice would we give ourselves, what would we want to know?
So, if hindsight is 20/20, here it is, the realities of living on a sailboat. The stuff we wished we would've known before we bought a boat, and set off around the world.
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for almost a decade.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
Because... Life is an adventure!
Extraordinary moments out there for anyone willing, and wanting, to go after it. Ya know life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.
Shared with LOVE 💕

  • Another good way is to volunteer as a crew member moving sailboats. I learned more from those captains than any sailing lessons I’ve taken over the last 30 years. Nothing like a before daybreak shift on a clear night where stars cover the sky and there’s nothing like running in 12’ waves where you see nothing but water as you go down those waves.

I have always laughed at you people with 1st world concerns verses the real people with 3rd real world problems. With an internet connection or the help of others you would die.

  • My wife and I have done quite a bit of sailing over the last 25 years... she gets horribly sea sick... unless she puts on a scopolamine transderm patch about 9 hours b4 leaving. They last about 3 days for her... and by the time they wear off she is 100% acclimated. In the US it's by prescription but they do work... nothing else does for her. Hope this helps others!

As soon as we sell our beach house we plan to buy a boat and begin our adventure, Can't come soon enough for me! We both enjoy your videos and have learned some very useful info. Thanks for sharing what you have learned! Maybe we'll see you on the high seas!

  • You guys are so courageous. 99.99% of people are so afraid to break out from same-ol-everyday life thing that they end up spending entire life doing the same thing over and over. And unfortunately, I am one of those 99.99% of people. Love your youtube channel, I have been watching for last 4 years. I've been looking for RV but still haven't raised enough courage to even do part time RV'ing. I envy you guys.

  • you both are ALWAYS smiling through any situation and that transfers to those of us watching you. THANK YOU! I have been dreaming of live-a-aboard boat life for many years. After stumbling across your channel, I've been obsessed with your journey. My countdown to this being my reality is 6-8 months away. The past 2 years I have been in full planning, budgeting, studying, learning, downsizing (aka no and prepping for this catamaran purchase and transition into sailing life. My top questions for you both would be...…(ssshhhh whisper and don't listen Curiosity, they LOVE YOU no matter their answer). Rewind back 4 years ago....Would you have made every effort to stretch budget to purchase a newer than 10 yr old catamaran vs. purchasing an older one and sinking money into some fixes right away? Have you thought about if you would have selected a different layout of catamaran, for example a cat with a flybridge? And lastly, have you at any time wished you would have gone for a 4 cabin cat vs. the 3 cabin owners version? These are my most pondering thoughts every time I watch all the cruisers and their journeys. A HUGE thank you in advance for taking the time to answer for me :) :) :)

    Amber BondAmber BondAylar önce
    • All good questions and I'll copy them over to the list! Nikki & Jason may also choose to chime in here when they see this, but they get these questions pretty often so I can give you some basic answers. Click over to the blog to the "sailboat shopping" tab for deeper dive into their thought process at the time. Newer used boat? Well sure, if money were no object. But they felt is was really important to a stress-free lifestyle to own the boat outright and they went way over-budget as it was with Curiosity. They then had 2 years to save up more money to complete all the repairs & upgrades necessary to make her ready for blue-water cruising. (Buying newer would have still probably required spending some additional money to get the boat outfitted the way they wanted, so newer is no guarantee that you won't need to spend additional money.) Flybridge: Nikki waffles back & forth on this one. I think the last waffle was toward no, because having the living space all on one level was really important & one reason they went catamaran & not mono. A flybridge also puts you more in the weather. Better view though! 3 vs. 4 cabins: although having a fourth cabin would be handy for those times when the entire Wynn clan comes to visit, I think the answer here would still be a resounding no. The 3 cabin or "owner's version" was one of their top priorities when shopping, for several reasons. First is just the separation from guests, which is nice for everyone. But it also provides a lot more room: bigger shower, more bathroom space in general, more storage, and even a small desk and workspace which I'm sure has come in handy when they have guests aboard. There's a full tour of Curiosity on the blog if you haven't seen it. Hope that helps! Curious Minion

  • This is the first vid of yours that I’ve seen and it won’t be the last. You’re both delightful, and I very much appreciate the “I’m just a regular guy/gal” approach. I’m a senior gal and got the notion a few months back that selling my home, etc. and living aboard a boat would be a wonderful thing, so I’ve been spending a lot of time on TRvision trying to learn about boats and everything it means to choose that lifestyle. I especially appreciate the videos like this one that show the warts with the beauty. I’m still vacillating between sail or motor, mainly bc motor yachts seem more conducive to a live-aboard situ, but seem to cost an arm & a leg in fuel cost if you want to go anywhere. Though I doubt I’d do a great amount of travel, I’d like to have the option to take off, and a sailboat, from that standpoint, seems the better choice. Regardless, I hope to get some sailing lessons in the next month or so. If you see this and think you have something to add that might aid in my decision making, I’d appreciate the feedback. I also have pets. I hope your joie de vivre is contagious!

  • If you took all of your advice as you see it today you might not have done what you have actually done. The obstacles would look too great and financially you might have said - this is impossible. I believe all of your advice and experiences are absolutely on the money however sometimes a person just needs to jump in and start the journey. Of course you can't be blind to the money issues but you actually did a lot of planning and preparation that the video doesn't give you credit for. Thinking you made a mistake not having you pilot license first does seem like a mistake to me. You got to learn to sale on the boat you actually own. What could be better and more relevant than that. I watched your buying process and thought you had a great broker and I believe you did too. I thought your expectations were a bit high on the condition of the boat verses price but it took your broker a little trickery to bring you to reality. He showed you a typical boat that was a disaster for you to understand the great boat that he had already found for you. Overall I am not sure you did anything wrong as you were very conscientious in the process. As long as feel you have the right boat the rest is just part of dues you have to pay to do what you are doing. This video however is of great value to people who are not as meticulous as you two were. You are a great team and together there does not appear to be much you guys can't do. I wish you the very best in your continuing journeys. Thanks for all of the great adventures.
