Red Digital Cinema has come under fire recently over allegations that their Mini-Mag storage cards are just cheap commodity SSDs in a fancy enclosure. As it turns out, there's some truth to these assertions, but the situation is not quite as simple as it's made out to be. Let's unwrap it.

  • I still dont understand ting tbh, in this day and age mobile data is prob at least in my opinion the most important part of a phone plan, i got a pre-pay(but they recently made it automatic via their app so i guess it now bill pay?) plan with 3 and I get unlimited data(4g LTE), free call to people on the same network, something like 5000 text per month and 25 euros to spend in google play....for 25 euros per month, Ting's 30 GB is 300$ I missing something here?

  • RED employee: Boss, this costs us $100 to manufacture. If we count the R&D that went into making this stupid interface, we break even at selling them at $130. What price do we sell them at? Boss: Hmm... Let me think..... *H O W A B O U T $ 1 5 0 0*

  • i would comment on the forums but forgot my password and cant wait 15 minutes. The part about damning them for using sata rather than PCIe isnt really a thing and i'll explain why. First in terms of board design, it is much cheaper for sata 3 than PCIe because of the amount of wiring and real estate space the chips require. Although both PCIe and sata have their compact external formats when i t comes to lowering costs for a high bandwidth interface, sata wins out and i'll explain. So at a low price you're stuck with PCIe 2 and not 3 when prototyping your own stuff (many cheaper external PCIe adapters for eGPUs are not PCIe 3). A PCIe 2.1 x1 would require much more expensive chips and design on both the camera and adapter, and less available real estate, more complicated wiring as you increase the number of lanes but at x1 you get 2.5Gb/s (bidirectional). Sata chips are dirt cheap even for sata 3 and design is much simpler requiring far fewer wires and the signal is electrically compatible in different forms, so this makes it cheaper and easier to design an adapter to fit it in different devices. Sata 3 is 6Gb/s. PCIe has higher overheads too so you end up with 2Gb/s practical. If we had 2 lanes, it will still be slower at 4Gb/s vs 6Gb/s. Pcie x4 would be faster at 8Gb/s. but require much wider connectors Remember that the red has been around for years so PCIe 3 as new by then, and people do not want to spend R&D to expand their products when they are selling something that works. In this case, i agree with RED in sticking to their sata 3 if its not the bottleneck even though you do nots get the full potential speed of the SSD as the adapter is specific for the device and using sata 3 as the interface choice is a lot cheaper and simpler. The fact that it doesnt use PCIe shouldnt be a let down, you should consider the factors of the design. Since SATA 3 was around when PCIe 2 came out, it makes much more sense to use that instead as when RED was designed PCIe 3 was new and more expensive,, as even AMD did not include them in their CPU chipsets till ryzen came out. The price difference in material may have been small but with any new tech it requires skilled developers who do not have any existing examples to use and have to deal with problems themselves. This is why if you use a PCIe based SSD on a PCIe 2.0 slot, you may end up slower than sata 3 if you cant get at least 4 lanes, even worse if 4 lanes is being shared by 2 SSDs on older boards, but newer PCIe gen 3 easily beats this at less lanes and easily beats sata 3.

  • They act like they are doing data recovery out of the goodness of their heart and not for customer retention, their brand, and a stopgap since they don't have redundancy. They overcharge 10x for the storage and have the balls to justify it "since they help do data recovery for free", except we wouldn't NEED data recovery if they offered redundancy in the first place. So they are justifying overcharging for a product since they "help fix" a problem that they created.

  • Why not just use 4x 1TB SSDs in RAID 10. Makes the price more reasonable. That's gotta beat active data recovery. They can even advertise that it's twice the size and twice as reliable.

  • It's a bit like Panasonic's P2 card format for their professional video cameras. The early cards were basically PC Cards that had multiple SD cards in RAID 0 inside. (Makes sense when you're shooting 100 megabit HD video in the mid-2000s.) Their newer cards are all integrated flash, still in the old PCMCIA form factor. Later on they introduced the microP2, which are literally just U3 SD cards with a "Panasonic microP2" sticker on them. Pop a regular U3 SD card in and it will work just the same. Only Sony seems to produce their own media almost completely in house these days, but that's just been Sony's M.O. from the beginning. Sometimes I swear they invent a new storage format, then come up with new devices to justify it.
