  • My mother had to deal with her grandad suffering with dementia. Apparently he followed a blue line into his bedroom, saw gorillas dancing and jumping on the bed, and passed out. From there he just got worse, trying to jump out of a window because he thought it was a tractor, calling my mum by his wife’s name and not even knowing who she is. my late grandfather passed away before that could happen to him, but I’m so terrified of having to watch my mother deal with it someday, possibly even suffering with it myself.

  • This film does good at showing the stress and pain Dementia can cause but i disagree that a young woman who knows very little about the disease and how to properly take care of someone with it is "stepping up" by taking her mother home with her. I've seen the best intentions become burned down homes because the parent got out of eye site for a moment (which is impossible to not have happen unless you hire a care giver to live with you). Retirement homes are always portrayed at something evil or bad when many are full of caring and knowledgeable employees who do know how to handle dementia and keep the parents safe. The stigma that retirement homes are bad and abusive or neglectful should stop really. Sure there are cases of screwed up things happening but that happens everywhere, also most retirement homes are micro managed by the state and federal gov to make sure no ones getting hurt. What people don't realize is retirement homes became their own communities and families. The residents do care and take care of each other as they would a family member, also of course family is always allowed to come and see their parents.

  • Thanks FF. I feel his movie somes up how dementia eats away at you and can be truely heartbreaking. My mom had dementia and the last 2 years were very hard. I actually quit my job to look after her as I was the one person she remembered the most (being the oldest). She past away last November from a stroke.

  • What did you even explain? You just narrated the obvious which we all know. I wanted to know what was her grandma since normal people don't she'd skin like that? Why did she turn into a black corpse? What was this whole story was about and why can't they leave since the grandma is now a dead corpse?

    sidsaad0313sidsaad031312 gün önce
    • @sidsaad0313 you have a point, but what I'm saying is that all that is happening to her is making her a different person obviously if you had blue skin and your bones would crack I'd be concerned. I mean if she was dead then why would they hug her body? and why did the mom have the same dark mass forming on her back as well? Maybe they've gone full psycho but to each their own I guess.

  • I think it is a tiny bit different than you think. You have been treating this as some sort of ailment when it really is not. Think of the movie "Skin Deep". This is not an ailment but in fact their true selves. The skin of which they wear is the mask or disguise that they wear to fool other humans. Yes, you heard me. Other humans. They are not human. The bruising of the skin is not bruising at all but their natural skin oils seeping through the human skin. The grandmother was trying to take her human skin off in the end as she clawed at her own chest and stabbed at her own face. The one element that was missing in this whole transition was human blood. The skin was not their own. Or maybe it was something they grew as a sort of survival tactic in order to live on Earth. Whatever the case, this is not the story of a human family at all. It's the story of an alien family. Somewhere in the house the father is still roaming around. And that house in itself was constantly changing. Perhaps it too is not really a house but only appears to be a house. It could be something quite different. Again think TARDIS. A machine that is supposed to match or blend with its surroundings. I think we were seeing an alien movie where the aliens had forgotten who and what they are. Of course this is just my theory. Maybe you are right and my theory is too far fetched.

  • My grandmother died last year from dementia and I can see the absolute terror my mom feels that it could be passed onto her. I genuinely didn't expect to be targeted like this, but I appreciate the movie for ending with such a bittersweet truthful response that you just have to give as much support as you can. I wish as hard as I can that my mother doesn't have that black spot on her, but if she does, I'll have to be strong like Sam and Kay.

  • I'm just going to say it. This movie is a mess. I am very sick of pretentious filmmakers and critics thinking that having a symbolic double-meaning to your film automatically makes it good. Your actual plot still needs to make sense when your film has a double meaning, it cannot just be a nonsensical vessel for the symbolism you are trying to portray. And yet that is exactly what this movie is. Nothing in it makes sense from a story standpoint. We never know what is going on or why things happen. This movie was so preoccupied with force feeding us their not-so-clever symbolism that they neglected giving us an actual story.

  • My best advice for dealing with those suffering from dementia: Do your best not to confuse them. If they get unimportant details wrong, just go along with it. Correcting them constantly only adds to their stress. I'm not saying you should LIE and sugar coat everything, or that you shouldn't try to help them remember, but pick your battles. I also found that explaining their confusion as a simple mix-up helped calm down my grandmother, for example, "Oh, you're thinking of his brother!" I think it worked because it provided an explanation for her confusion while still reassuring her that her mind wasn't completely gone. Anyway, the movie includes a surprising amount of details of coping with a loved one struggling with dementia. The grandmother being able to hold it together and seem fine in front of the doctor, the struggle with getting her to accept help, the huge swings that can happen moment to moment, the denial, it's all remarkably similar to my own experience with my grandmother.
