Rescuers Save Toddler on Runaway Duck Float

Rescuers raced to save a toddler swept out on a runaway inflatable duck float. It happened on Lake Michigan, far from shore. Water safety instructor David Benjamin grabbed his paddleboard to try to reach the terrified child. Before he could get to the float, the duck flipped over, dumping the little boy in the water. Fortunately, another boater was able to grab him. The incident brings to mind several other incidents involving wayward floats.

  • Some people shouldn't be parent's. This is not appropriate for a beach.. a pool? yes but a super large body of water? no.. inflatables should only be used in a pool and an adult need to be there at all times. I can't believe parents would put their babies in these things in a beach or lake. That's insane!

  • He could have easily died. He could have got eaten by a shark or been stranded out their too far for people to give up. And it flipped over he could have drowned if they weren’t their quicker or already on the way to rescue. Please watch your child in the ocean on a raft or inflatable. God bless this family and I’m glad he’s okay.

  • Here we go again, carelessness of parents. These inflatables aren't for the ocean! They're for the pool! And no life jacket? I'm done.

  • That’s why people sometimes tie ropes around the handles or neck of a pool float just in case it gets too far out, they can pull it back

  • One time i went to a place (no not the fricking beach) and it was deep and i went after a flamingo float like the big one for a pool and it got to the point when it was very deep and i only had a surfboard so i tied the hand strap on one of the handles for the flamingo and i got on the flamingo and my older cousin was on her way to drag me with the surfboard i was dum but a stared paddling with my hands and i got close to shore safely -w-‘ so kids *always bring a surfboard with you.*

  • Ok on the great lakes it's always windy, so if they a common sense they would know not to bring that, and I believe in Michigan law a child under the age of 5 (or 9 don't really remember) has to have some life persevere with or on them
