Restoration rusty old air compressor | Restore vintage air compressor
Our next project is to restore an old air compressor. The air compressor we bought at the second hand shop. It still works quite well, but its parts have been rusted a lot. We are not specialists in machinery restoration , so there are not enough tools for the job. But with all our strength we try to improve in the best way. I am happy to receive your feedback, advice, suggestions to improve yourself. I am very sorry that there are unwanted mistakes in the video .
Thank you for watching the video and for us to suggest

  • Just wondering about how safe the tank is; it sure looks rusty! I understand you can get them water pressure tested?

  • Well 24+ minutes of my time I will never get back. You should have done a simple hydrostatic pressure test (since you were not going to send it out to be certified) The Tank clearly had rust issues and is potentially dangerous. The breakdown and cleaning was okay, you might consider wearing gloves when using a strong solvent as your hands will absorb the chemicals. New rings were good, not sure how cylinder walls were - a true rebuild would have honed them. The painting was just awful. Most metal requires a prime coat then a top coat. Spray painting would have been nicer after plugging all the ports. The belt guard did not look well preped for paint either. New belt I hope. The electrical hook up looked to be under gauge for the size of the motor as well. Risky pressurizing this tank not knowing if it can handle the psi. On an aside, you may want to mask off where you spray paint (the belt guard) and since you had the grinder/sander out, you might as well have cleaned up the Stanley vise rust. You have potential, keep working at it.

  • Do you sit them in vinegar or just spray them down with acid before these "restoration" vidoes? because rust doesn't get that bad without severe rust pitting yet nothing out of the 20+ videos of yours I've seen needed more than a good scrub.

  • Many people forget what kind of stored energy you're dealing with in a pressure vessel like that. Exploding air tanks are no joke. You could end up dead or wish you were. The rusty water you were draining out means the metal inside the tank, especially near the welds, is damaged. The tank can and will explosively rupture. I wouldn't pressurize that tank without a blast cage or something solid surrounding it. Be careful out there.

    David HatzenbuhlerDavid Hatzenbuhler29 gün önce
    • David Hatzenbuhler the water wasn’t particularly rusty and the amount of it was significantly above normal amounts for that tank size. My guess is they just added a bunch of water maybe with a hint of acid which although it would produce the rust coloured water it would actually clean the inside of the tank and a simple rinse out would have cleaned it up and the structural integrity would remain unaffected.

      Jon StarkJon Stark26 gün önce
    • @Jon Stark The rusty water being drained from the tank is what I was referencing. Whether he put salt in the tank or not it's crazy to pressurize a tank once it's proven to have rust inside.

      David HatzenbuhlerDavid Hatzenbuhler26 gün önce
    • Rust was artificially introduced, my guess is acid or a salt bath and then left in the sun.

  • I think, having committed the work to strip, I would have replaced bearings, belt, gaskets, and hoses. Also, I would have found a way to strip and repaint beneath those welded brackets on the tank. Overall, it seems a lot of effort to do half a job.

    • Yes, I take your point. But is that the question? If, for the price of those parts, you create a "good as new" reliable compressor, for much less than the price of a new one, then it's worthwhile?

      Mick LivelyMick Lively28 gün önce
    • The parts will cost more than the compressor.

  • I love resto4ation videos but God it pisses me off when I see people ruin things just to make a video. This was staged. A shame. A fake. This was a fine working machine then they used something to weather it. All the cables are perfect. Even the connections. All the nuts and bolts are almost new where ever was incased by a nut or thread. The connections to the pressure solenoid are shinny bright copper.. And not to mention the missing and rusted tank. You buggers are getting damn lazy. You can early see when he turns the thing upside down how what ever they used to ages it ran down the sides and just settled and dropped off the bottom and didn't effect the belly. I know it wasn't a brand new machine but it wasn't anywhere near as old and beat up as they make out. Why almost ruin something so you can put up a restoration video. I will was a rebuild video just the same So do a rebuild video not a restoration video. Bloody liars and scammers piss me right off.

  • I'm gonna try to be nice, NOPE do not use the ould tank with just paint on it, not unless the inside is clean up and out also, tanks rust from the inside out. you can not fix problems inside the tank because people do not bleed of the water inside them you have made a ticking time bomb that the tank can burst on you break things or even worse kill you. Never reuse a old tank that is not certified safe. Its not worth the risk.
