SpaceX StarHopper Static Fire (LIVE 1.5 miles away)

PLEASE NOTE: There is no publicly available T-0 and the test is subject to change of time OR date. So don't be surprised if this stream gets delayed as well.
SpaceX plans to test their StarShip prototype vehicle known as StarHopper today with a brand new serial number 6 Raptor Engine. The vehicle will be tethered or held down and will not move during this, which is why it's called a "static fire"
Need to know more about the Raptor engine and why it's awesome? trvision.net/detail/video-LbH1ZDImaI8.html
Thanks to the people at Enjoy SPI for helping me get an awesome hotel on South Padre Island! I'm not getting paid to say this, but if you're looking to catch StarHopper, definitely stay on South Padre Island and book with them, it's been incredible! - enjoyspi.com/

  • Mr Everyday Astronaut, Love the new style if videos. Would you be so kind as to practice doing fewer 'Ums'? Cheers.

    • @Everyday Astronaut I know, not easy at all. Try to have an idea of what you want to say or get across beforehand and then try to speak in clear sentences and paragraphs. Most importantly, try to speak more slowly. We use the uhms as fillers because we dont trust our listeners to keep their attention on us. Trust that your audience will keep listening when you pause. Pauses are natural, and they make people listen harder. And practice really helps.

  • Tim, thanks for making us witnesses to the big fireball. It was awesome. But really, don't take it so hard to defend Spacex, they are big guys now and they can defend themselves perfectly well. But it's nice to see they haven't run out of ideas for big fireballs :) Lol, I think one day we're all going to miss those early days of tests and static fires and random explosions. When everything starts working well, there gonna be just boring regular launches.

  • Probably they used some sort of flexible hose tubing (or even some valve, etc) for combustible supply which cracked after the movements and vibrations caused by the engine firing. Some miscalculations on the amplitude of those vibrations... See also: "Creating a Fireball - Pouring Water on an Oil Fire" ... Never add Water to a Burning oil (combustible)..! trvision.net/detail/video-NC45vREoEOg.html

    MikeMike6 aylar önce
  • I think the engine is fine. 1) it's supposed to withstand immense temperatures, 2) the fire was not located on the engine, it was at the access port and ground connection. Presumably hopper hopped an inch or so, even with tethers and that separated the connector to the fuel line just enough to make it leak and then when it came back down maybe it bent the connector or something. Unusual what happened with the access port though, usually absolutely nothing should come out of it. Come sunrise and lift of road closure we may get closeups and better views of the connector. At most some cables below may be burned that need to be replaced. Development engine has a lot of extra sensors and thin wires. I think we should not hope for a hover today. Inspection and potential replacement of fuel connections and other parts may take longer
