  • So aside from being nervous at their first time really performing live without a vocal track, there are several problems here: 1. They only rehearsed this song a couple of times and Lena rehearsed it by herself as Yulia had a vocal cyst. Often times when Yulia was forced out of recording or rehearsals, Vanya had Lena sing Yulia's part which is well out of her vocal range. We see this in the first chorus with Lena attempting to match Yulia, likely because of her nerves and muscle memory from the rehearsal. And her voice just isn't capable of that. 2. Subsequently, during the second chorus, you hear Lena adapt a slightly lower register, creating the duality of vocals we're accustomed to. It's not quite harmonizing, but she is singing within her range. Yulia was always the "screamer" and it's what absolutely destroyed her vocal cords. 3. Yulia is flat through out the. Entire. Song. This is likely due to the damage on her vocal cords which she had been treated for around the time of this performance, but which we all knew grew so bad she had major surgery in 2014 and her voice hasn't sounded the same since. All in all, this is a really great song and we know now they are capable of singing it live, but this performance just doesn't rank 3rd place imo. I really think the only reason they got 3rd was their level of fame at that time. Still...an interesting moment of music/Eurovision history to relive from time to time :)

  • The amount of ignorance is cringy in this thread. So facts: 1. Turkey would've still won regardless whether it was full televoting results or not. The Irish National Broadcaster RTÉ later published the unused results of the televote, which showed that had the jury not been used, Turkey would still have won, and Ireland's voting "partners", the United Kingdom, would still have no points. Russia did not receive any points from the televote, however, since Belgium only received 2 points from the Irish televote as opposed to 10 points awarded by the Irish jury, Russia would have placed second. And if I'm not wrong the Irish televote granted Turkey with 6 points vs. 0 granted by the jury. 2. Bosnia&Herzegovina, Ireland and Russia were the only countries to have voted through jury voting that night. Despite the Europe-wide appreciated performance, Russian jury opted to give Nul Point to Turkey just to guarantee their victory. And Russia's decision over using back-up jury votes instead of the televotes is still deemed suspicious by the EBU. Both Bosnian jury and televoter granted Turkey with 12 points anyways. 3. True that Turkey made great use of diaspora from countries such as Belgium and The Netherlands and a few others, however doesn't explain why Turkey also got high points from rest of the Europe as well. (23 countries voted through televoting.) Ireland, Russia, Latvia and Estonia giving Turkey 0 points due to their prejudice and lack of acknowledgment neutralizes this diaspora advantage anyways. Most other former USSR countries are also known to appreciate little the Turkish entries. And let me remind you the high points even coming from Cyprus (8 points) and Greece (7 points) to the first Turkish entry fully interpeted in English. Not to mention all the hatred going on against Turkey in Europe. Despite that, Turkey won. 4. As you can see, Turkey was and is the rightful winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2003; get over it. And it gave Europe and amazing show in İstanbul in the following year opening with Sertab's another stunning performance. Just another proof. Stop comparing the ESC 2003 to the political Eurovision Song Contest of 2016.

    • Idk, I remember reading that Channel 1 in Russia and Tatu's management got letters in the mail a year or so later stating them as the actual winners after there was an investigation done into the whole votes not being counted fiasco. At the end of the day who really cares tho? Eurovision isn't really anything to be proud of lol. As much as I've heard people usually just watch because it's a campy trainwreck where groups of old ladies sing folk music, ladies with beards perform bond theme rejects etc. Hell, Jedward alone haha.

  • Seriously, as much as I like that song, but the only thing that was more off-key in 2003 was the entry from the UK. I think the only way you could like this performance is if your blood left your ears for your nether regions, and in this case I'd recommend the Polish song from 2014, it's the way better soft porn.
