The diving gondola: a strange elevator to the ocean floor

On the German coast of the Baltic Sea, there's a tourist attraction that I think is very strange: the "Tauchgondel", a room that sinks under the waves and lets you go diving... without getting wet.
More about the Tauchgondel:

  • Yes, I would very much have liked to experience the holding brakes being released while we were submerged -- but that's strictly for emergency situations!

    • I've been on tourist submarines twice, in the Marianas Islands. I'm humbled to realize I can't remember if it was Saipan, Guam, or both. We got to see wrecks left from WWII in addition to tropical sea life.

    • That is a brilliant, elegant and simple idea! Would love to experience it, even if visibility is zero. Let's have one in the Menai Strait, for instance, where the water is some of the clearest around Britain, and the currents are strong without being excessive.

  • Tom, have you ever heard of Pacific Ocean Park? No, I didn’t think so it was off the west coast of Southern California near LA. I experienced this back in 1964 without the music, etc.

  • Seems like much is dependent on water quality. That location may be a bad choice for this...

  • Tom, "normal elevator" have opposide balance weight, so it can rush up If some gear broke and you are only alone in that thing. So if someone are afraid to falling, it dosen't mean that It's true scenario. And sadly, falling is safer thang going up without breaks. You are not build to walk on your head.

  • As a german who grew accustomed to not only hearing but speaking english throughout my day, this has kind of tricked my brain. The moment the german guy starts explaining stuff about the gondola, I was like "this sounds awfully familiar... but I don't know the words that he's speaking... OH ITS GERMAN"

  • It's still a wonderful feat of engineering, with tremendous potential. We know less about the oceans than we should.🌟👏

  • I went to the one on Rügen recently. It was cool just to peacefully watch the water and the few jellyfish floating by... but that only lasted 5 minutes because they then put down the shutters and played the goofy 3D film for the rest of the time. 3D is bad enough, but here you have to watch it at an extreme angle because of the shaft in the middle of the gondola and this angle ruins the 3D effect. And it was just straightforward nature footage anyways - very odd choice. I would rather them submerge and simply talk about the fish, engineering, etc.

  • This contraption, although making some damage to the sea floor whn installed, would be great out in a reef enviroment, so that tourists could spend some serious time underwater watching real marine life. Also, I want a private one to live in, just like an old school Bond villain....

  • I actually liked his idea of a corridor on the seabed with thick walls and windows so you can walk through the bottom of the sea, imagine like a tunnel that goes underwater to connect two piers but with sunlight from above, I wonder if that exists somewhere.
