The Rise Of Toyota

Toyota became one of the world’s largest automakers by churning out cars, trucks, and sport utility vehicles. In the United States several models were among the country's best selling cars in 2018 including the Toyota Corolla, Camry, Highlander and Tacoma.
Over the years, Toyota has grown a reputation for being affordable, reliable, safe and... kind of boring. A scion of the Toyoda family, Akio Toyoda, now has the reins at the company and has given the company a severe order for no more boring cars.
Now the Japanese giant is doubling down on speed, adventure, and cutting edge technology, in a bid to survive and succeed. It recently relaunched the Toyota Supra, which was originally produced from the late 1970s to the early 2000s.

  • I bought my first Toyota, a basic basic Tercel with 4-speed manual transmission, in 1992 for under $7K when I was in grad school. Since I picked up the car from the dealer, the image of a brand new red MR2 on the dealer's lot with a sticker price of $19K has stuck in my mind. During the same period, a fellow student's new Supra in the nearby school apartment with the famous high spoiler has been in my memory forever. Fast forward 27 years later, Toyota released the GR Supra. It so happened that I was in NYC when the NY Auto Show opened in April. Two GR Supras were placed on a wedge shape structure several feet high in the Toyota booth. I didn't even walk close to them or look at them directly. As a coworker stated, why does this GR Supra thing even exist? A Toyota without a Toyota engine bearing arguably the most iconic name? Was Akio Toyoda drunk when he gave the order?

  • in 1990 i bought a Toyota pickup, best vehicle I've ever owned, had it 19 years and put almost 400k miles on it, many of them i drove the crap out of it. even pulling a travel trailer with it and it only had a 2.4L 4 cylinder. I got 18 mpg while pulling the trailer. in the end the engine was tired but still running and all original except the radiator, starter, and alternator. like I said best vehicle I've EVER owned.

  • I can really Get behind that "no more boring cars" idea. I periodically catch myself double taking when I see a new Prius (the most boring of cars) drive by because they're styled so damn well. You can get nearly 400hp out of a Ford Taurus SHO, but you'd never know it. The new Mustang kept the same back half and it looks like they just slapped the front end of Fusion on. The design of it just looks lazy and is boring af.

  • That new Supra is a BMW, it's not a true Toyota, even the new 86 isn't a true Toyota as Subaru helped design it. Toyota needs to bring back their sports cars but actually design them themselves. The MR2 should also come back.
