The Time Futurama Broke Itself

Go to for 15% off your order! Brought to you by Raycon.
Futurama is one of the greatest animated shows of all time. Bender, Fry and the rest of this universe may also be a great example of what can go wrong with one of modern medias most talked about trends, the retcon. While the best Futurama episodes all stand the test of time, one was changed, and not for the better. If you know anything about a waiting dog, you might be one step ahead. Sometimes the best media can magnify what works and what doesn't within a medium, Futurama is one of those pieces of media.

  • Futurama is my favorite show. What’s yours? Link to the brand new Patreon: ALSO: You could argue that BBS creates an alternate universe/timeline in which a different seymour is saved of his fate. That’s fair! I still feel a bit cheated by BBS but that is a good counter point. However, this is a video that uses Futurama as a conduit for an altogether different discussion about media. So maybe I can dive into time travel in media in a different vid!

In season 3 the girls have to deal with a very tough foe who has a piece of the same power as one of the girls. in episode 13 which is called One Last fluttering of Wings. one of the characters seems to die. the episode after #14 Fury Most of the main characters decide to act on revenge. all but one. it gets to the point where the most powerful one is actually trying to get revenge. but with a timed intervention by the teachers she doesn't succeed. It also Forces the Headmistress of the school to make a decision. She sends the unstable one to a place where dark thoughts brings death or focus on survival. The episode is made a lot more dramatic by a prefect cliffhanger. no show has ever measured up. just watch the Rai English version

  • The big thing to remeber is futurama works in a converging timeline concept. There are plenty of examples of them going to the past and changing things. Even to the specifics like the diffrence between scooty puff jr. and sr. So the fact that a fry lived in the past doesnt change the fact that a Seymour lived 12 years waiting for our main primary fry.

  • honestly when RETCON is done bad, it means that it takes away from the meaning. good RETCON can change the tone and implications of the story and adds to world. plot twists are a classic form of RETCON.

  • Berkeley does not give degrees in parapsychology. Phrenology never had a single college class, and has been proven false dozens of times. The other degrees just say "Degree" or "Master's in science". If you had any clue about the staff having actual degrees, you could at least produce a single example. Instead your graphic shows anti-science.

  • I don't really see why saving that dog from over a decade of loneliness and heartbreak is a bad thing. That sounds like a good retcon to me. I mean, I'm not sentimental enough to have considered Jurassic Bark the saddest thing ever as so many others seem to, but if that's how you felt, having it retconned should surely have come as a _relief,_ right? One might look at it as more of a _plot twist,_ where something you found depressing gets turned around and made hopeful and heartwarming. Time travel stories actually do this all the time, just not typically in this format. At any rate, I don't quite get why so many people seem to value narratives that make them sad higher than ones that make them happy.

If your knowledge of animation pertains only to say....what is on modern western cartoons and your comparing it with the likes of The Simpsons and South park?

  • I don't think it changes it all that much; in the end, Fry still leaves his dog dead, and he's still leaving the dog dead due to a misunderstanding. Seymore never moved on, in either timeline; in both he was still Fry's dog, and in both, Fry leave's him dead, because he mistakenly thought that he'd moved on.

  • Actually is it really a retcon? Those two episodes actually go very well with the many words theory, Fry being frozen created a quantum event in where the universe would have split allowing both outcomes to happen. So Seymour is both happy and sad and all Futurama did was add to the Schrödinger’s cat experiment where until it is observed both lines happen, and once observed the possible outcomes collapse to the out come we observed, we just got to see both ( with an added timey whimey nonsense in there too lol ).

  • I wouldn't really say that this was a particularly bad retcon, it was just a means of telling an alternate story. If you go back and watch the series from beginning to end and get to Jurassic Bark, it hits you just as hard every time. I've watched the series from beginning to end in marathon form, 5 times. Even the clip out of context with the closing music to the episode still makes me tear up nearly 20 years later.

  • No, I disagree. Seymour's fate hurt so very badly from the first time around that it was like healing our souls to have Fry come home. It's like they actually took us to a real farm where everyone's first dog is in fact happily chasing rabbits in the sunshine.

  • "It removes the impact" It doesn't change the effect the episode had when you first watched it though. Also is a retcon involving time travel the same as a regular retcon? I feel like it kinda gets a pass.

  • How was it a retcon? Who said Fry went back in time in the same timeline that we know? He could've just gone to a different timeline but it just so happened the fabric of space time linked all of those timelines. I don't think this video quite understand how time travel works.

    ThomasThomas2 gün önce
  • It's only retconning if you assume that time travel is deterministic. Like the series DARK.

  • most of the remakes i don't watch because they change them purely on political grounds to appease the politics of today including characters which exist without story. ghost busters rather then taking the golden opportunity to pass the torch from the old characters to the new one's they wrote it in such a way to just shoe horn it in. all remade series and modern iteration of past media i watched i can state with certainty only ruin it by not making original story or reason for existence and just appealing the new with the facade of the old.

    pollard1997pollard19972 gün önce
  • I feel like there is a simple solution, when dealing with time travel, you can not just jump back and forth between eras. If you jump between time, new realities are created behind you like a spider web so one could imagine that the old fry created a new reality when jumping to the future leaving his timelines reality behind. Simply a theory because there is no way to prove time travel but this is what I always figured.

  • the fact that semore's dog stayed outside a shop for 12 years actually might be a reference to Hachi a dog who waited outside a train station for his master for 12 years after he died.

  • People mentioning Fry going back in time only messing about with Seymour's timeline. What about his family? His mother longed for him when he was gone. His own mother even had a trans temporal psychic dream which she shared with Fry. Francis named his son after his brother to live the life that he shouldve lived before vanishing.

  • you're looking at it like "oh we now know that 5 years from now, it's gonna be all right, so it loses its impact" but the viewers aren't "supposed" to know that, if they are watching the episodes in order, like they should, then they will see jurassic bark first, feel the impact, then later, they will see bender's big score.

  • Uhm no it didn‘t retcon as in „somehow explaining how the new shit fits in with the old stuff“. They just changed a detail in the past by time travel. Retcon would be an extra episode where you see how the Fry clone who lived with Seymour actually neglects him or gets lost or whatever turning the sequences in bark episode where you see Seymour desperatly waiting for Fry into something where he‘s actually waiting for the Fry clone.

  • You wanna talk about retcon and Futurama? In the episode Decision 3012, Senator Travers uses the time sphere (the one which corrects paradoxes) to travel back to 3012 and run against Nixon. However, the episode ends with Travers being erased from existence because he wins, since the future he’s from can’t exist without Nixon winning. However, if the time sphere corrects paradoxes, why would it kill Travers? Wouldn’t it correct the paradox that erased him? Also, Bender from Big Score is seen attacking the human survivors in the future, but the time sphere can only go backwards in time, not forwards. That is explicably stated in Big Score. So how did Bender (with the laser gun and glasses from Big Score) travel into the future? He couldn’t have waited because he’s still infected with the obedience virus, so it has to be the Bender during Big Score. The only way it makes sense for Travers to die is to be killed as a time duplicate, which he is once he goes back to 3012. That would make sense as to why be dies, but that’s not the reasoning given for it. That episode has always pissed me off because they use clearly established rules but then break them for seemingly no other reason than oversight.
