We Finally Understand The Incredible Hulk MCU Trilogy

The Hulk has been a popular fixture in the MCU for years. But it wasn't until later films, like Thor: Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame, that the Hulk narrative was really let off the leash. Here's a run-down of the Hulk's hidden MCU trilogy.

Hulk kicked things off in the MCU back in 2008 with The Incredible Hulk. The story wasn't exactly a bad one, but it wasn't a great one, either, especially considering the caliber of so many of the Marvel movies that came after it. Part of the issue with Hulk's non-starter in the MCU was the fact that the movie picked up partway into the story and proceeded to go…kinda nowhere.
The movie introduces Banner after he's already become the Hulk, skipping right over his infamous gamma radiation incident in the process. Of course, that doesn't automatically equate to a negative, Captain Marvel also jumps right into the story as it's already developing. The difference, however, is that Carol Danvers' film circles back around to show how she got her superpowers. The Incredible Hulk simply charges ahead, assuming everyone already knows about the whole gamma radiation thing.
Things still could have turned out alright if the film had ended in an appropriate place, but, once again, it manages to drop the ball. While the climactic fight against Abomination is fun, the movie ends with Banner finally coming to terms with Hulk…which would have been great, if Marvel didn't then retcon it in The Avengers.
Sadly, a meandering storyline is just the beginning of The Incredible Hulk's problems. Another issue with the film is its excessively serious nature, which contrasts starkly against Iron Man's light and witty tone. Edward Norton's version of Bruce Banner is sulky, serious, and spends most of the film depressed. While the character is certainly an improvement over the version seen in Ang Lee's Hulk, which came out half a decade earlier, it just doesn't fit the MCU's tone. The movie just feels like it belongs in an entirely different universe than that of Tony Stark.
Another complication that surfaced was the growing tension between Norton and Marvel Studios. That's not to say that Norton wasn't committed to the role, on the contrary, the Academy Award-nominated actor brought a lot of vision and depth to the character. But when the rubber hit the road, things just didn't fit well behind the scenes. In the ensuing fallout, the actor and the studio parted ways, not on the most pleasant of terms, and the Hulk found himself at a crossroads. Keep watching the video because we finally understand the Incredible Hulk MCU trilogy!

  • For me, the Hulk is a SIDESHOW in the MCU 😡🤬. In the movies (Thor: Ragnarok, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and don't even count Avengers: Infinity War because he berally had screentime) he didn't do a lot, it tooked ELEVEN YEARS after The Incredible Hulk untill he FINALY had something to do with the PLOT!

  • I think if we do get another Hulk movie it'll be about his time on Sakaar and the movie will start off with the Marvel Studios Logo but instead of the music playing it'll be Thor saying to Banner "So Banner I've been meaning to ask you, do you remember your time on Sakaar through the hulk?", then Banner says "No but the Hulk does" and then it clips to the Quinjet crashing onto Sakaar and yeah showing Hulk on Sakaar

  • I completely agree that the Hulk that we see in the Incredible Hulk is different than Ruffalo's Hulk, but I don't necessarily see that as a total retcon of the character. The way I see it is that, over the course of time between the Incredible Hulk and The Avengers, Banner went through a rough isolation period. For all we know, he practically cut himself off from society for the vast majority of that two year period (because TIH takes place in 2010, but regardless time period does not matter here). He even explains that in Avengers. When he finally came back around, he relearned that being in isolation didn't allow him to learn how to control it when he is in an environment where he can't really control the situation himself. I mean think about it, he didn't need to be afraid about letting the Hulk loose in a cabin in the woods. In a village, let alone a city, that's a different story. Of COURSE he was depressed before Avengers. The only difference between Norton's Hulk and Ruffalo's Hulk is that he learned to be more humorous.

  • Well it completely ruined the movie for me!!! Fans were expecting World Breaker or at least a version with the eyes glowing green or something. It should have been Hulk matching Thanos in one on one, not Captain Marvel!!! Comes the big finale, we get Rune King Thor(fat but still), Nanotech Ironman, Capt wielding Mjolnir, everybody reaching their full potential. Instead of a stronger version of the Hulk we get mcu's professor hulk aka "NO HULK" aka "BANNER ON STEROIDS" aka "BENCH THROWER". He loses his loved one and in his rage he throws a bench up in the air!!!! What a SHAME!!!!!

  • Actually your wrong about 2008 hulk being In the MCU. The Incredible Hulk 2008 is not part of the MCU for me. I think it should have a New edit version with mark rufflo in it and have the original version of the film decanonsied from the MCU and replace it with iron man 2 as the 2nd entry and have the new version of the Incredible Hulk being part of phase 4 and as a prequel

  • Great video. The one thing I didn’t like is when you said that The Incredible Hulk from 2008 didn’t show how he got his powers. Ummm, yes it did! It shows many flashbacks of Banner in the Gamma radiation labs turning into the hulk, that was actually a very important plot piece in the movie and in the entire MCU. And it’s not that he “came to terms” with the hulk at the end of the film, it’s that he learned to control the hulk(hence the heart rate monitor on his wrist)

  • Ultimately it's all about the writing, if you want a strong alpha male hulk then you right him that way if not then you make him Mr Rogers. It seems that MCU only like alpha males as bad guys or jerks not heroes. The hulk could have been like world breaker hulk have intelligence but remain hulk, what we saw was banner in green skin. I also did not like how "professor hulk was embarrassed of his 2012 version from avengers 1 , that is what hulk fans love about him it was insulting to hulks character.

  • Idk why The Incredible Hulk gets such a bad wrap.... It's one of my favorite movies. It does Hulk justice and is awesome. You don't need a massive storyline into how he got his powers, you need fighting, hulk being awesome, and (you guessed it) more hulk fighting.... If anything I'd take The Incredible Hulk over the hulk they gave us in Endgame hands down....

  • the incredible hulk wasn't really retconned the "i'm always angry" line was the connect to the end of that movie. in the norton movie small things still set him off and the whole point of brazil and jiu jitsu was to use those breathing techniques so he had some sort of control. without it he'd be like in the old bixby hulk would be triggered by flat tires or smashing his finger on something, everything set him off. ruffalo hulk was very much in control of when the hulk emerged but didn't like unleashing him. he wasn't stressed by shield trying to ambush him, the prick by stark didn't set him off. what accidentally made him lose control was loki and the scepter but that was by design everyone was acting aggressively. i know it's been a long time since that movie came out but i think people who say it's retconned or not really part of the mcu didn't really watch it or don't remember it. also applies to people thinking that thunderbolt ross wasn't corrupt as fuck in civil war, he wanted to use the avengers as a hit squad or have them in jail (caps distrust in him was spot on). the hulk movie made it clear he's not a good guy, he wants power so bad he never cared who he hurt, he just uses the military to seem legitimate. i think his use was specific, they could use a random general, but they brought him back i think to inform the audience that the accords where not legitimate and we should understand he's part of the problem not some benevolent patriot who is concerned with these supers out of control, but i digress.

  • Hulk got to do the snap which brought the "dusted" back, so there's that at least. But the maddest he got in Endgame was tossing a bench in the wake of Black Widow's death, and we never got to see him have a rematch with Thanos, which is a travesty. If you cut through the "three-arc storyline" bull that the Russos hyped up dating back to Thor: Ragnarok, it really boiled down to getting Mark Ruffalo more facetime (even if partly digital). Sorry, but a wisecracking Shrek wannabe who didn't even have a moment doing what Hulk does best (SMASH) during the entirety of the culmination of the Avengers saga was a Fox/Fantastic Four-level mishandling of the character and really hurt Endgame in hindsight, at least for me.
