What is the BEST Fuel to Use in Your Car or Truck and WHY

Ever wonder what grade gasoline should you use in your car (what octane)? Are you paying for premium gas when you can just use regular? Are you using regular and damaging your engine? This video will bust all of the myths and tell you the FACTS on what fuel you should use and why.
Many people throw money away and fill their car with the incorrect fuel every day. Running premium or midgrade in a car designed to run regular is a waste of money and has no HP or MPG benefits. You will not make more power or get better fuel economy running premium fuel if the car manufacturer tunes the car to use regular gas in most cases. I also see some people run regular gas in cars that need premium and the knock sensors have to adjust timing significantly to prevent damaging engine knock. I also hear a lot of people say that premium gasoline has more energy or burns cooler or slower so I will put a rest to all of these "myths" with facts.

    • this isn't really related to this video but one of my cars rear speakers is busted and i can't figure out how to get the panel over the speaker off. i have a 2008 Pontiac g6 gt 3.9l v6 hardtop convertible. i dont have the owners manual and have looked all over the internet for videos and nothing. i have even been on a Pontiac owners forum but they weren't much help. i was wondering if there was anyway you might be able to help with my problem? if not its cool.

So I own a 2002 Honda CR-V (Type 2). There is something wrong with the car’s battery. Last night we started the car and went for a long drive. Everything was fine. Today morning when I tried to unlock the car with the remote,it won’t. Then When I tried to start the car, everything went blank. Not a single light on the dashboard and the car wouldn’t even crank. The battery went fully dead. And this is the second time this is happening. We bought a completely new battery and it’s dead. So can you please tell me where the problem can be at? Not a single light was left on and the battery was completely new. Same thing had happened a week ago,but the battery was old. We suspected the old battery and changed it with a new one. Now I think there is a problem with the car. And yes,the alternator also seems to be fine. Do reply, it will help me a lot since I am not being able to find a solution to this anywhere on the internet. Thank you mate.

  • Just a thought but... couldn't we approximate what octane to use by charting cranking pressure? It's not perfect - it assumes rings and valves in good shape, but DCR and cranking pressure should trend alongside each other.

  • I added this comment in: Brake fluid changed to synthetic even on dot 3. I had a wheel cylinder go bad. I made sure the mechanic got all the old brake fluid out. I didn't want a mix in the brake system. Do you think it's Ok to add synthetic to non-synthetic brake fluid? Personally, I didn't want to take the chance.

    • Ricky thinks you can mix it. As long as it's dot 3, they should not separate. Of course if you had an open in the system, new fluid should be changed so it doesn't attract moisture causing brake failure.

  • I have a 2007 Cobalt SS you see in my profile picture. I use 89 octane in that. Premium didn't make much change, but 87 will make it idle ruff after a few tankfulls. It has the 2.4 liter engine.

  • Hello Chris nice videos i am fan of yours. Here in east europe were i live i calculate if we were to buy diesel in gallons, 1 gallon is gona cost 4.92$ . And with regular months salary of 400$ . So that is the main reason why we are happy with 2.0TDI(140hp). I wish we can all buy V8 and enjoy our lifes.

    • Just do not ever use gas with ethanol in it! It gums up the carb. Here in Wi I use the premium at Kwik Trip which has no ethanol. As a side note; I ran premium in my 2008 Silverado for a whole summer while prices were down and saw a 4mpg increase in my fuel economy. Ethanol is junk!

For those of us that need to run Premium, my (informal) testing shows three brands that work really well (Shell VPower, BP/Amoco Ultimate and Sunoco Ultra), and others that don't work well at all (Mobil, Exxon and generics). My 2005 Saab 9-5 Aero has a high-output factory turbo, and requires 93 Octane fuel. It also has a Trionic engine management system (so it can anticipate knocks and dial back the boost and spark advance to prevent detonation, and allows temporary overboost if the fuel is good enough). My winter driving (from the NYC area to the mountains of New England) is great for testing - includes consistent fast highway driving and big hills. If I'm using anything other than the three brands listed at the beginning of this post, my car a) gets lower gas mileage, b) has less power going up the hills (have to downshift when I normally wouldn't have to), and c) won't allow overboost. Where I live, Shell V-Power and Sunoco Ultra command a higher price that Amoco Ultimate from BP. The V-Power generates more power/overboost, while Sunoco Ultra provides slightly better gas mileage. The Ultimate does neither (but car runs absolutely fine) at a better price point. Note that my observations may play differently on cars without a Trionic system or overboost. Enjoy.

  • Amazing video Chris! I guess i cant even imagine how much work you put into making this video, moving all those cars back and forth and making those animations. I just started my own car fix channel and it takes alot of work just to film a simple oilchange. There is so much extra work with moving cameras, camera lights running out of battery, people coming and going, etc etc so something that normally takes 30 minutes takes 3 hours instead.   • My 2016 gmc Denali 5.3 uses 93 octane to pull a trailer. If I use 87 it will detonate. I don’t get better mileage by using 93, actually worse, just smoother performance at redline with 7800lb going up a hill.
