    • You made me frown when you criticized "The Patriot." It's an awesome movie. I don't care if any of it isn't accurate historically. It's got a lot of awesome action scene's. And also Mel Gibson didn't single handily take out the British army. He and his two sons helped take out a small company of them guarding on of the characters older sons. They were trying to rescue them.

  • The only way to repel massed Musketry was with massed Musketry, as you would not have the same density of firepower. After Napoleon's defeat, there was also a relative peace in Europe that lasted almost to the end of the 19th Century, and while weapons continued to be improved, the Tactics remained the same. It wasn't till the advent of wired communications and the radio, were Troops allowed to be dispersed along a line of battle, as Command and Control could then be maintained.

  • Why did Soldiers Fight in Lines? So that you could actually hit your target. War''s always been a game played by the rich. Which is why savages use guerrilla warfare.

  • The real question is why do they take enemies’ shots for free? It’s the part where 1 side is about to fire and the other side is just standing in formation... why didn’t the other side prone on the ground? Then get up once the opponent reloads

  • The answer is far from hitting the nail`s head. Loading a muzzle -loader takes time during which a single soldier is defenseless against cavalry-charges or massed infantry, thus he needs close support by fellow soldiers. Weapons dictate the tactics, that is all.

  • If early gunbattles were more about scaring one side into retreat instead of actually killing people then why not just make giant rolling explosive cannonballs, roll them into the enemy lines, and have them blow up?!

    Shawn PShawn PAylar önce
    • How will they make sure the cannon balls wont explode when reloading, midair or wont explode when its supposed to, and those were probably hella expensive with rifles being expensive already

  • Why did soldiers fought in lines? Semi automatic firearm: "BECAUSE I WASN'T INVENTED IN THAT TIME!" Also, line fighting was a part of traditional formation fighting as the well known institute of FORCE MULTIPLIER from ancient times. You can shoot only one bullet with the musket and spend lot of time reloading; that's why formation was created as a force multiplier to kill more enemies where as the bow and arrow was faster to reload so the bow shooters were more doing it from a cover.

  • Weak flanks and an assailable rear were still an issue throughout the era of linear tactics. The socket bayonet (as opposed to the plug bayonet) did not address the problems dealing with simple geometry. But it address the issues in dealing with calvary.

  • I learned this in 5th grade so I’m using that info. They did this because old weapons were not accurate so if you fire in a line better chance to hit your opponent.

  • Makes sense why they call it a bayonet Bay - Imagine a battlefield aka the sea O - a circle (hint hint square formation) Net - A net Translated: Square formation in a battlefield, and cavalry are charging the square formation but the infantry are repelling them like putting a net over the cavalry

  • Why a line? 1: Command and control - back then orders had to be shouted or relayed by drums or bugles, it was hard enough during battle in a line, mostly impossible if your spread apart 2: protection against cavalry - a regiment that stays together can form a square quicker, to protect against cavalry 3: maximizing firepower - muskets had a effective range of about 80 yards, and so a line would do the most damage to the enemy both physically and morally 4: Moral - soldiers were more willing to charge the enemy and march in the face of death if they did so together There were three main for formations for infantry 1: line - best for fighting other lines, cav can flank and break it, semi-maneuverable but hard to do over broken ground, not very vulnerable to cannon (round shot) 2: Square - a line will beat a square but horses can’t break in only ride around, not very maneuverable, semi-vulnerable to Cannon ( round shot) 3: Column - great for marching and maneuvering while only able to shoot a few muskets at once but can quickly close up to the fight against cavalry, very vulnerable to cannon (round shot)

  • Linear formations historically were for the following: 1-showing control, order, and morale; 2-assisting in re-loading with a rear echelon to re-load as the front discharged; 3-before firearms, lines allowed your mates to join in, forcing the enemy to flee, due to swords, a solid wall of shields, or formations such as the phalanx...

  • So even though guns in the 18th and 19th century has a high fire power they are not that accurate? Does that mean that mongols will still be a nightmare for europeans even if they are still using cavalry archery?

    Joel BascomJoel Bascom3 aylar önce
    • @Dod o yup that's true but remember like romans mongols of that time are very good in adapting warfare, Surely they would not fight you according to eurpean warfare and western type of formation they will go around you and then rain lots of exploding arrows on your cannons and infantry followd by a murder fest of cavalry. Trivia; did you know that at the end of 13th century they already have a rocket altilery before stalins organs was even invented?

      Joel BascomJoel Bascom2 aylar önce
  • They didn't know how actually dishonorable and stupid that it is, and how modern people now view it. Instead they viewed it as a civilized, honorable way of fighting to just line up and eventually die from a projectile. It also was due to temporary huge inaccuracies in firearms that made them wildly inaccurate. The fighting style originated in Europe and died off as soon as other nations showed how to fight off Europeans (their decapitation strikes on leadership/capitol cities no longer worked, and they couldn't fight civilized against a brutal and 'effective' enemy). People soon realized how stupid that style of fighting was even though it largely continued into the mid-1800s (even with American revolutions in riflery and more accurate rifles/shots available).
