Why The Office Changed The Original Michael Scott

When you look back at The Office episodes that best define Michael Scott, very few of them are from the first season. The best Michael Scott moments come in moments like CPR or fire drill and there's a reason for this. The office changed the character in big ways between the first and second season. This is a look at why the office changed the worlds best boss so much.

  • I like it from the start. The cringey stuff was the reason it was funny as fuck.

  • The 40 Year Old Virgin in 2005/2006 took Steve Carrell to a different level. The creators of the show acknowledged his elevated stardom and adjusted the character centralizing him to others, and also made him likable.

  • The reason the office is funny is because it doesn’t have a laugh track, when a character makes a joke or does something they think is funny we the audience are sitting there in visible cringe

  • Even during the later seasons he is sooo awkward. Michael is cringey and creeps me out. Michael is selfish and gross. He makes everything about him and I hate him. I literally hate everything about him. At phylis wedding he had to steal the show at someone else's wedding like wtf is wrong with you? Like if he is t the center of attention then he looks like he is going to cry. Like I really can't stand him. When Daryl told him he had an easy life he faked a suicide attempt. Michael treats Toby like garbage for NO reason. Michael is a disgusting child, terrible at his job and is generally a bad person. Like I really cannot stand him. FUCK!!!

  • I want the original Michael Scott to team up with the Original Hamburglar and the milkshake-snatching, four armed abomination known as the Evil Grimace. The only villains so nefarious, so terrifying that they needed a complete overhaul.

  • You forgot to mention Todd Packer. He came in Season 2 Episode 2. His sole purpose was to show you a REAL terrible boss and the way Michael interacts with him shows he isn't a bad guy, he just wants to fit in or emulate what he thinks is "cool", but that's not his true nature.

    Jason AveryJason Avery5 gün önce
  • Jim and Pam saved season one. I think that's why they are so popular. People who saw season one only stuck around to see what was going to happen with their relationship. Then Michael Scott kept it interesting with his transformation.

  • What the hell are you babbling about? Brent didn't work as a character because we only saw so little of him, he works as a character because he's loaded with pathos and subtley. Changing Michael Scott had nothing to do with cultural translation or longevity, the US writers and Carrel just failed to recreate Gervais' character and HAD to try something they were more equipped for. Also, to say Brent lacks humanity is nonsense. A person would only say that if they'd only seen the first episode and didn't get it. For all of Brent's ill-conceived jokes and needy bids for attention, it's so clear that he's just a cheesey man-child who wants to feel valued. The character has so much humanity that watching him lose his job is actually the most devastating point in the series.

  • I just have to say I feel like it was necessary to have him fleshed out this way; I would not have enjoyed the process of loving, liking, understanding him without this "horrible" beginning. I enjoy the evolution and don't see it as a problem that needed fixing but a story that needed growth.

  • 12-episode British miniseries? Our sitcoms are usually 6 episodes per season, it's not a miniseries. The office ran for two seasons and it was considered complete. The US office took our format and did what they always do which is run it forever until it dies.

  • I never really thought of this show as a mockumentary, it’s not that believable. A show like Trailer Park Boys has a more believable style. Two completely different types of show, but same concept.

  • Season 1 Michael sucks. I always tell people who haven’t seen it yet (miraculously) to get through season 1 and then it gets better. Having seen the British one (and hating it), I hate that they basically did a remake of it for season 1. It didn’t need to happen. The UK one is not better. It honestly makes me resent Ricky Gervais’ little tirade even more. Edit: unpopular opinion. I don’t like Holly. She’s annoying and kind of a static character. Dwight and Angela are the best couple on the Office. Change my mind 😂

  • I really feel like you've misjudged David Brent. You called him mean spirited, but he's not at all. The one thing he wants is for people to like him, that's very identifiable, and it gets him into most of his troubles.

    Shannon GerryShannon Gerry16 gün önce
    • The only real “mean spirited” character in the UK Office is arguably Chris Finch. Everyone else is flawed but ultimately sympathetic in their own way.

  • Michael's relationship with Holly was the thing that least rang true for me in the entire series. He was so clingy and needy and desperate for her after she was transferred away from Scranton, that I couldn't imagine that not looking totally pathetic to a woman. And only then, after already not looking good in that way, does he read her email? What woman could have fallen for him at that point?

    Craig StalloneCraig Stallone16 gün önce
  • Why does he talk this way? This is really hard to listen to, with the narrator sounding like that.

  • The final conclusion is that it's better to be unique - aimed at a show which in direct opposition to this point. Michael didn't evolve, the writers did it to please an American audience. The English relate to David Brent, and his failures. Americans can't even bare to watch a fictional character suffer. It's American optimism at it's peak. Michael became what he became because of the audience. There is nothing else to take away from this. "Be yourself"... what a boring platitude.

  • The original Michael Scott is not really all that bad. I for one love the first season, but I realized after a few times of watching the show that I didn’t love the first season until I was able to go back and realize and appreciate the change in Michael Scott. It wasn’t until then did I find a new appreciation for season 1.
